What is By Name Title

Typically, you see By Name Title in a contract signature block presented as follows:

  • By:
  • Name:
  • Title:

By” is where a person or representative of a company must sign.

Name” is the name of the person or entity signing the contract.

Title” applies to a person acting on behalf of a company or as a representative of someone else.

For example:

  • By: (your signature)
  • Name: John Smith
  • Title: President

Alternatives to By Name Title

In some cases, instead of By Name Title, you’ll see different variations such as:

  • By Title Date
  • By Name Title Date
  • By Its Date

When you see “its”, it is perhaps referring to a person’s title acting for business.

For example, Company ABC, signed by “its” President, John Smith.

Contract signature block

There are three scenarios when a person may sign a contract:

  • A person signing on his or her own behalf
  • A person signing as a power of attorney on behalf of someone
  • A person signing on behalf of a business entity

The “Name”, would show John Smith and the “by” field will show John’s Signature.

By: ________________________

      John Smith

Power of attorney signature

If John Smith is mandated to represent Jane Doe further to a power of attorney, in the “by” field, John Smith will sign as “John Smith POA” or “John Smith Power of Attorney for Jane Doe”

By: ________________________

      John Smith POA

By: ________________________

John Smith Power of Attorney for Jane Doe

Business signature

If John Smith is representing Company ABC, the “Name” will be Company ABC, “by” will be John Smith and “title” will be president.

COMPANY ABC Inc.
