Some of the largest banks in the world, or prime banks, are:

  • BNP Paribas SA
  • JPMorgan Change Bank National Association
  • The Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi
  • Industrial & Commercial Bank of China
  • Deutsche Bank AG
  • Barclays Bank PLC
  • Citigroup
  • Bank of America

As such, the world’s largest banks are generally considered prime banks.

Prime Banks Definition

How do you define prime banks?

In simple terms, prime banks are among the largest banks in the world, that are well-known, trade a variety of financial instruments, and are part of the largest transactions in the world.

Another definition of prime bank is to refer to the top 50 largest banks in the world as “prime banks”.

Prime banks provide a breadth of products and services, such as:

  • Manage deposits
  • Lend money and provide large loans
  • Provide wealth management services
  • Perform currency exchange
  • Provide investment banking services

Prime Bank Features

How do you determine if a bank is a prime bank?

Prime banks are very large banks that perform a high volume of transactions, and for significant sums of money, on a global scale.

Here are some of the features you should look for to determine if a bank is a “prime bank”:

  • The bank is among the largest banks in the world
  • The bank handles a high volume of transactions
  • The bank handles some of the largest transactions in the world
  • The bank represents some of the world’s largest companies doing business worldwide
  • They trade instruments like Monetary Fund and world papers

Since prime banks have a lot of assets, represent global clients, handle a high volume of transactions, they are commonly used to move money from one country to another in facilitating global transactions.

Prime Bank Fraud

Although prime banks bring a lot of value to global corporations, governments, and investors around the world, we should also be mindful of the many fraudulent schemes and activities that may leverage the name and reputation of prime banks.

In many cases, a fraudster will approach unsuspecting individuals or companies offering them investment schemes or various profitable business investment opportunities through a prime bank or facilitated through one.

The criminals will use prime bank branding, logo, and official-looking documents to lure their victims and convince them to make an investment or to transfer a certain amount of money to them for a highly profitable investment opportunity.

To make their scheme more realistic, they can even go as far as having their victim sign non-disclosure agreements (or NDAs) to keep the content of the “business opportunity” secret.

Ultimately, when the victim transfers money or makes an investment, the fraudsters take the funds and vanish!

Prime Bank Fraud Example

Let’s look at an example of prime bank frauds to better illustrate the point.

Here is an example of prime bank fraud scheme warned by the FBI:

“International fraud artists have invented an investment scheme that supposedly offers extremely high yields in a relatively short period of time. In this scheme, they claim to have access to “bank guarantees” that they can buy at a discount and sell at a premium. By reselling the “bank guarantees” several times, they claim to be able to produce exceptional returns on investment.”

“To make their schemes more enticing, con artists often refer to the “guarantees” as being issued by the world’s “prime banks,” hence the term “prime bank guarantees.” Other official-sounding terms are also used, such as “prime bank notes” and “prime bank debentures.””

“The purpose of these frauds is generally to encourage the victim to send money to a foreign bank, where it is eventually transferred to an off-shore account in the control of the con artist. From there, the victim’s money is used for the perpetrator’s personal expenses or is laundered in an effort to make it disappear.”
