A residential area refers to an area or space where the properties located on its territory are residential where people have their residence or domicile.
A residential area can be opposed to other types of zoning such as industrial zone, school zone, or other types of areas.
Different people may use different terms to refer to a residential area, such as:

- Resident places
- Residential district
- Residential location
- Residence area
Depending on the context of the sentence in question, all the above terms may refer to residential areas.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, residential is defined as:

In other words, residential is something where living accommodations are made typically referring to home, house, dwelling, or other types of accommodations.
According to Dictionary.com, the area is defined as:
“Any particular extent of space or surface” or “a geographical region”
In essence, an area refers to location, space, range, or zone.

Now that we have defined the meaning of “residential” and “area”, we can now look at the definition of residential area (or area of residence).
My definition of residential area is as follows:
A residential area is a location or space where individuals occupy to live and is used primarily to set up homes and personal living accommodations.
In other words, a resident area can be summed up as:
- A place or geographical location
- Where individuals
- Live and carry out their personal day-to-day living activities
In a residential section, housing is a type of property that dominates other types of properties in the same region such as industrial properties, commercial properties, or other types of properties.
How Do Residential Areas Work
For an area to be considered as residential, the sector or territory must be legally zoned to be residential.
A parcel of land can be designated as residential allowing for builders and developers to start building residential properties and for the city to build a residential infrastructure.
If an existing area is reclassified as a residential sector, then any non-residential properties (like businesses, industries, manufacturers, or others) will typically be grandfathered allowing them to continue remaining there.
It does happen that a sector may get reclassified and the non-residential properties must be destroyed but that will be more of an exception than the norm.
Zoning is a method used by the government or state to plan the layout of a piece of land or sector.
There are different types f zones that can be defined allowing for the building of different types of properties such as residential and industrial zones.
Depending on the zoning attributes given to an area, individuals and businesses must respect the zoning laws to ensure that they comply with the legally mandated requirements.
Zoning laws may define aspects such as:
- Lot sizes
- Form of buildings
- Location of properties
- Height of properties
- How the land can be used
It is possible that an area may be designated as residential but also allow for other types of properties that are not considered residential in nature.
There are new areas being built where there’s a combination of residential properties along with cafés, restaurants, offices, and other non-residential types of properties.
These areas where you have both residential and non-residential use are generally called mixed-use zoning.

Generally speaking, residential places include the following types of properties:

- Multi-family residential properties

- Land zoned for residential use
- Residential apartment buildings

To allow for individuals to live in an area considered to be residential, you’ll need to have various services such as:
- Transportation routes and infrastructure
- Hospitals and healthcare services
- Schools and educational facilities
- Energy and energy infrastructure
- Telecommunication and Internet services
- Water and sewage system
These are crucial services required to allow the residents of a residential neighborhood to live and satisfy their basic residential needs.
In some areas are considered residential but rural may not have all the services available to residential districts in urban sectors but will still be considered residential.
